Kick-Start Kindergarten is a service project with emphasis on literacy tutoring at the Jonesboro Kindergarten Center. Junior Auxiliary members provide literacy tutoring to emergent readers, and also make themselves available for any subject students might need a little extra help with. Each committee member is assigned a teacher and works 30 minutes to an hour a week with a student from the assigned classroom. Teachers identify children who have trouble reading printed symbols but are otherwise verbal and artistic kids. Kick-Start committee members strive to assist these children with their reading and academic difficulties before self-esteem becomes an issue. They also strive to bring a little fun to the classrooms by providing assistance for parties in rooms that don’t otherwise have active parental support in that area.
